Adding friends via QR code

You can add friends (or they can add you) by scanning a QR code.

To have a friend add you using your QR code:

1. Tap the QR code icon on the right side of the search bar > My QR code, or tap here from your smartphone.

2. Have your friend scan your QR code with their QR code reader.

To add a friend using their QR code:

1. Tap the QR code icon on the right side of the search bar, or tap here from your smartphone.

2. Scan your friend's QR code.

3. Tap Add.

Note: The search bar appears at the top of the Home, Chats, and News tabs.

You can also send your QR code via email by tapping the Add friends icon > Invite. For details, see this Help article.

Important: If your QR code is leaked, anyone using LINE will be able to add you as a friend. Take care not to share your QR code with people you don't know.

If you want to prevent people you don't know from being able to add you as a friend, you can deactivate your current QR code by tapping Regenerate on the My QR code screen.

Adding friends via a link

You can add friends by having them access your link or by accessing theirs.

To have someone add you as a friend using your link:

1. Tap the Home tab > the Add friends icon > QR code > My QR code.

2. Tap Copy link.

3. Send the link to the person you want to have add you as a friend.

Important: If your link is leaked, anyone using LINE will be able to add you as a friend. Take care not to share your link with people you don't know.

If you want to prevent people you don't know from being able to add you as a friend, you can deactivate your current link by tapping Regenerate on the My QR code screen.

To add a friend using their link:

1. Tap the link you received.

2. Tap Add.

Inviting friends to use LINE

To invite friends to use LINE:

1. Tap the Home tab > the Add friends icon > Invite.

2. Tap Text message or Email.

3. Choose a friend and tap Invite.

Important:

- Invitations are sent using your device's text messaging app or mailer. If your friend doesn't receive your invitation, contact your mobile service provider for assistance.

- The text of the invitation email will display your name as it is set in LINE.

Automatically adding friends from your contacts

To auto-add the contacts saved on your phone as friends on LINE:

1. Go to the Home tab and tap Settings.

2. Tap Friends.

3. Turn Auto-add friends ON.

Note: If Auto-add friends is already turned ON, tap the refresh icon next to the last auto-add date to manually sync your contacts.

Re-adding deleted friends

To re-add friends that you deleted, you need to add them manually via LINE ID/phone number search or QR code.

Note: After you've deleted friends, you cannot add them again using the Auto-add friends feature. This includes going to the Home tab > Settings > Friends and tapping the refresh icon next to Last auto-add.

Friends on LINE

Your contacts on LINE are listed as "friends." When you add someone as a friend, you can chat with them and invite them to groups. If you are mutual friends, you can also make voice calls with each other.

Note: Voice calls are not supported on some devices.

How friends are initially added after installing the app

Your friends who have phone numbers saved in your contacts list and are using LINE will be added as friends automatically when you first sign up.

To prevent automatically adding friends and being added as a friend, please turn OFF Add Friends or Auto Add Friends, and Allow Others to Add when signing up.

I want to exclude certain friends in my contacts list from being automatically added

You can exclude certain friends from being automatically added by adding # in front of their name in your contacts list.

This feature applies to LINE version 5.6.0 or later.

To exclude certain friends from being automatically added:

• Add a # in front of their name in your contacts list. Be sure to enter # as a half-width character (E.g. #John Smith).
• Have friends added automatically from Settings.

Please be aware of the following:

• Friends who are already added as friends on LINE will not be deleted, even if you add a # in front of their name.
• If you add a # in front of the name of a friend who is already added, the name they set on LINE will appear.

If you wish to only add a few friends from your contacts list, you can do so by searching for their phone numbers.

People Nearby

People Nearby is a feature that allows you to search users around your current location and make new friends.

To use People Nearby:

1. From the Home tab, tap See more under Services.

2. Tap People Nearby.

You will be able to see the profile photos and distance of other users who are also using People Nearby from your location as well as send out a friend request to users who interest you. If they accept your friend request, you can start exchanging messages with each other.

Do I have to allow access to my location information to use People Nearby?

People Nearby uses your current location to help you find new friends near you. For this reason, you need to allow the app to access your location information.

If you have Location Services turned off on your device, or if you have not allowed LINE to access your location, refer to the following steps:

For users with Android OS version 6.0 or later

1. From the Home tab, tap See more under Services.

2. Tap People Nearby.

3. Follow the steps below based on the pop-ups that appear:

• From the Allow location access pop-up message, tap Allow.

• From the Enable location services pop-up message, tap Go to Settings and turn ON location services from the settings menu on your device.

For users with a version of Android OS earlier than 6.0

1. From the Home tab, tap See more under Services.

2. Tap People Nearby.

3. From the Enable location services pop-up message, tap Go to Settings.
