Back up/restore chat histories

- Premium Backup is only available to LYP Premium (Japan) or LINE Premium (Thailand) members.
If you still have your old device
Make sure you're using the latest version of LINE. (Update LINE to the latest version)Transferring your chat history to a new device running the same OS
First, check your old device to make sure that:• iCloud Drive is turned on (iOS only).
• There is enough free space in iCloud Drive/Google Drive.
• It's being used in an area with a strong network connection.
Next, follow the steps below to back up your chats:
1. From the Home tab, tap Settings > Chat history backup or Back up and restore chat history.
2. Tap Back up now or Create backup PIN and back up chat history.
Note: You can confirm the PIN you set by tapping Backup PIN.
3. After your backup is complete, tap Transfer account and transfer your account with an easy transfer QR code.
Transferring your chat history to a new device running a different OS
You can automatically transfer your chat history from the last 14 days if you set a backup PIN.Note: If your new device is running a different OS, you cannot transfer your chat history from before the last 14 days that you backed up to iCloud Drive/Google Drive.
First, set a backup PIN on your old device.
Note: You can confirm the PIN you set by tapping Backup PIN.
Once you've finished backing up your chats, please transfer your account.
Depending on whether your new device runs the same OS as your old device, the data that can be transferred along with your account will differ. Refer to the following Help article for details.

To restore your chat history after transferring your LINE account, you need to back it up beforehand.

Using Standard Backup:
With Standard Backup, your chat history is backed up to iCloud Drive or Google Drive.
Only text messages from your chat history can be backed up with this feature.
Before performing a Standard Backup, be sure that:
• iCloud Drive/Google Drive is turned on.
Note: This feature is unavailable on devices that cannot use Google Drive.
• There is enough free space in iCloud Drive/Google Drive.

iOS users
There are two methods available for backing up your chats to iCloud Drive.Manually back up chats to iCloud Drive
1. Open LINE on the main device your account is registered to.2. Tap the Home tab >

Note: If you don't see Back up now, you need to set a backup PIN, so tap Create backup PIN and back up chat history.
4. After your backup is complete, tap Transfer account or Close.
Note: If you tap Transfer account, you can transfer your account with an easy transfer QR code.
You can use cellular data when you do a manual backup, but you may need a Wi-Fi connection depending on your iCloud settings. Make sure you've enabled using iCloud with cellular data.
Automatically back up chats to iCloud Drive
1. Open LINE on the main device your account is registered to.2. Tap the Home tab >

4. Select how often you want to back up your chats.
Your chats will only be backed up automatically if your device and settings meet the conditions below when the auto-backup refresh starts.
• Your device's screen is locked.
• Your device is plugged into an outlet.
• Your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
• The iOS Background App Refresh setting is turned on.
• LINE is running in the background.
Note: To check if LINE is running in the background, go to Settings in iOS > General > Background App Refresh, and make sure LINE is turned on.
Android users
There are two methods available for backing up your chats to Google Drive.Manually back up chats
1. Open LINE on the main device your account is registered to.2. Tap the Home tab >

Note: If you don't see Back up now or Back up to Google Drive, you need to set a backup PIN, so tap Create backup PIN and back up chat history.
4. After your backup is complete, tap Transfer account or Close.

Automatically back up chats
1. Open LINE on the main device your account is registered to.2. Tap the Home tab >

4. Select how often you want to back up your chats.
Your chats will only be backed up automatically if your device and settings meet the conditions below when the auto-backup refresh starts.
• Your device is plugged into an outlet.
• Your device is connected to the internet.
Note: If you can't use a Wi-Fi connection, you can still back up your chats with Use mobile data selected.
Your chats will be backed up automatically when you stop using your device and its screen has turned off.

Using Premium Backup:
Note: Premium Backup is only available to LYP Premium (Japan) or LINE Premium (Thailand) members.
With Premium Backup, you'll be able to back up the following chat history data.
• Text messages
• Photos
• Videos
• Files
• Voice messages

Even if you haven't backed up your chat history beforehand, you can transfer your chat history from the last 14 days regardless of the OS when you set up a backup PIN.
Note: If you've backed up your chat history beforehand, you can only transfer your entire chat history between the same OS. Refer to the following Help article for details.
Backing up your chat history
For the steps to set, check, or reset your backup PIN, refer to the following sections.
Setting a PIN code
1. From the Home tab, tap Settings > Backup and transfer > Chat history backup/Back up and restore chat history.2. Tap Back up now or Create backup PIN and back up chat history.
3. Enter a six-digit number.
4. Tap the arrow.
Checking/resetting a backup PIN
1. From the Home tab, tap Settings > Backup and transfer > Chat history backup/Back up and restore chat history.2. Tap Backup PIN.
Note: If you're asked to unlock the screen, use the unlock method you have configured on your device, such as your passcode or biometric identification (e.g. fingerprint, face). Do not use the password registered to your LINE account.
3. Check the PIN you currently have set.
4. To change your PIN, tap Change.
5. Enter your new PIN, and tap Change.
Make sure your backup PIN is a secure combination to prevent it from being used by someone else without your permission.
Here are some tips for setting a hard-to-guess backup PIN:
• Don't use consecutive numbers (e.g. 123456).
• Don't use the same number repetitively (e.g. 111111).
• Don't make the PIN your birthday.

Follow the steps below to restore your backed up chats.

- This feature is only available to LYP Premium (Japan) and LINE Premium (Thailand) members.
iOS users

- You cannot restore your chats by starting LINE and tapping the Home tab >

1. Turn ON iCloud Drive.
2. Transfer your LINE account with your new main device.
3. Once the screen to restore your chat history appears, tap Restore chat history.
Follow the steps below to change your iCloud Drive settings.
Note: Make sure to log in to iCloud with the same Apple ID you used to back up your chat history.
1. From your iOS device, tap Settings > your name at the top of the screen.
2. Tap iCloud and turn ON iCloud Drive.
3. Turn ON LINE.
Note: If different screens appear on your device and you cannot follow these steps, please contact Apple directly.
Android users
1. Open LINE on the main device your account is registered to.2. Tap the Home tab >

If you see an error message about an unknown error when backing up your chat history with Standard Backup or it's stuck loading, see the solutions below.
Settings you need to configure to back up your chat history
Configure the settings below for the device you're using.
iOS users
Turn on iCloud Drive and iCloud Backup. Your backup may not finish if either setting is off.• Set up iCloud Drive
• Back up iPhone using iCloud
Android users
Give LINE permission to access your contacts with the steps below.1. Go to your device's Settings > Apps.
2. Tap LINE.
3. Tap Permissions > Contacts > Allow.
If your chat history auto-backup fails
If a chat history auto-backup fails because you don't have enough free space in Google Drive or on your device, you'll see one of the following error messages as a notification or on the settings screen.Note: You will not receive a notification if an auto-backup fails for another reason.
• Backup failed at XX:XX on MM/DD.
Not enough free space on Google Drive.
• Backup failed at XX:XX on MM/DD.
Not enough free space on your device.
If you receive either of the above notifications, make sure you have enough free space on your device and Google Drive, then try to back up your chat history again.
Solutions to try if the issue persists
If the issue persists after you've configured the above settings:
• Try backing up your chat history multiple times.
• Update your operating system (OS) to the latest version.
• Update LINE to the latest version.
• Restart your device.
• Delete unnecessary data from iCloud or Google Drive, as well as your smartphone (or SD card or other storage).
• Turn your 4G/5G/Wi-Fi off and on again.
What to do if the issue persists after trying all of the above solutions
• Set a backup PIN.
If you're unable to proceed with backing up your chat history to iCloud Drive or Google Drive, you can restore the last 14 days of your chat history (text messages only) by setting up a backup PIN.
• Use Premium Backup.
Note: Premium Backup is only available to LYP Premium (Japan) or LINE Premium (Thailand) members.
You can back up and restore photos, videos, files, and voice messages shared in chats, regardless of the OS you're using (e.g. Android, iOS). For details, see About Premium Backup.
My chats were restored, but the photos and videos weren't:
Photos and videos sent in chats cannot be backed up or restored with Standard Backup.
Note: If you use Premium Backup, you can restore photos, videos, files, and voice messages shared in chats. This feature is only available to LYP Premium (Japan) and LINE Premium (Thailand) members.
If you transferred your LINE account and restored your chat history from a backup when changing devices, the photos and videos in your chats and in Photos & videos, from



If you have photos or videos you wish to save, please save them to another device before transferring your account.
I can only restore some of my chat history:
To restore your entire chat history when transferring your LINE account using Standard Backup, you need to restore it from backup data saved to iCloud Drive or Google Drive.
Note:
- Setting a backup PIN beforehand or transferring your account with an easy transfer QR code will only transfer the last 14 days of your chat history.
- If you want to restore earlier chat history, be sure to do so from backup data saved to iCloud Drive/Google Drive.
You will not be able to restore your chat history if you didn't back it up to iCloud Drive/Google Drive before transferring your LINE account.
If you saved a backup of your chat history to iCloud Drive/Google Drive in the LINE app beforehand, please restore it from the relevant service.

Premium Backup lets you back up your chat history in real time, including photos and videos, to 100 GB of storage provided by LINE. It is only available to LYP Premium (Japan) and LINE Premium (Thailand) members.
Moreover, using Premium Backup allows you to transfer more than the last 14 days of chat history (including text messages), even when transferring your LINE account between devices with different operating systems (e.g. Android to iOS, iOS to Android).

Data that can be backed up:
The following data (excluding LINE VOOM and OpenChat data) shared in chats can be backed up.
• Text messages
• Photos
• Videos
• Files
• Voice messages

- Photos, videos, files, and voice messages that expired before using Premium Backup may not be backed up.
- Some photos, videos, files, and voice messages shared before using Premium Backup may not be backed up.
- Your chat history is backed up in real-time, so if you delete a chat, it will not be saved in your chat history and cannot be restored.
- If you don't open LINE for 14 days or more, chat history stored on the LINE server that expired within that time frame is also backed up.
Note: To check the chat history for this period, you need to restore it with a method detailed in Restoring your backed up chat history. The chat history for that period will also be restored when restoring chat history in scenarios such as changing devices.
Backing up your chat history:
To use Premium Backup, please first make an initial backup. When the initial backup is complete, subsequent chat history will be backed up automatically.
Note: You cannot stop Premium Backup after you begin using it.

- If you back up your chat history with an external recovery tool during the initial backup, data may be lost. If you're using an external recovery tool, make sure you back up your chat history using the tool after the initial backup is complete.
To make an initial backup:
1. Tap the Home tab > > Chat history backup under Backup and transfer.
2. Tap Back up now.
3. Check the pop-up that appears, then tap Agree (only on the initial backup).
4. Enter your password and check the important notes about passwords, then tap Continue.
5. After the backup finishes, tap OK.
For details about passwords, see the following Help content.
About your password
After the initial backup finishes, you'll receive a completion message from the LYP Premium (LYPプレミアム) official account (Japan)/LINE Premium (LINE พรีเมียม) official account (Thailand). The time it takes to complete the initial backup varies depending on your network connection and the amount of data to upload. If you use Wi-Fi and leave the initial backup screen open, it can complete faster.
If you close the initial backup screen while using the LINE app, the backup will continue.
Note: Depending on your device, the backup may be performed in the background even if you're not using the LINE app.

Restoring your backed up chat history:
You can restore your backed up chat history if your device is damaged or you change models. Please refer to the information below.

Note: When the initial backup finishes, a dedicated screen for Premium Backup will appear. Make sure to transfer your account after checking that the following screen is shown.

If you're transferring your LINE account

- If you transfer your account with an Apple ID or Google account and don't enter the password registered to your LINE account when logging into it, you will not be able to receive Premium Backup services. If you reset your password while transferring your LINE account, your Premium Backup will be deleted. For this reason, please take care in managing your password.
If you're transferring your LINE account with a phone number or QR code:
Tap Restore chat history on the “Restore chat history” screen.
If you're transferring your LINE account with an Apple ID or Google account:
On the “Enter your LINE password” screen, enter your password and tap Continue > Restore chat history.

After you finish transferring your LINE account, update the LINE app, then follow the steps in the “If you skipped restoring your backup while transferring your LINE account” section below.
If you skipped restoring your backup while transferring your LINE account
1. Tap the Home tab >
2. Tap Restore.
3. Tap Restore.
Managing your storage:
If your stored data reaches 100 GB, new media (photos, videos, files, and voice messages) in your chat history will stop being backed up.
Delete unneeded data on the Manage storage screen to free up space.
Note: Be aware that deleted data cannot be restored.
Once you've freed up storage space, backups will automatically start again.

- Any media shared in chats seven days or more prior with your stored data exceeding 100 GB cannot be backed up even after you free up space.
