Friend issues

My friend's account appears, but a different person is using it toggle
If you synced LINE with your device’s contacts, your friend list on LINE will use the names registered in your device.
Note: When you open a friend's profile pop-up on LINE, the display name that they set will appear in a smaller font under their name from your contacts.

For this reason, if a phone number registered in your device's contacts was canceled or entered incorrectly, the LINE account belonging to the current owner of that phone number will appear under your friend's name in your friend list.

Please contact your friend via a method other than LINE to confirm their phone number if you are having any of the following issues.

Issues occurring on your device:
• A different account appears in your friend list under your own name
Check whether an old phone number is registered under your name in your device's contacts.

• Someone who doesn't use LINE appears in your friend list
Make sure the person's phone number is correct and current in your device's contacts list.

• The name of someone in your friend list suddenly changes
Check whether you changed their registered name in your device's contacts list.

• You meant to chat with a friend registered in your device's contacts list, but it was actually someone else
Check whether you've registered multiple phone numbers for your friend in your device's contacts.

Issues occurring on other people's devices:
• Your friend sees you on LINE even though you don't use the service
Check whether your old phone number or other information is registered in the contacts on your friend's device.

• Someone you don't know sees you on their LINE account when you register a newly contracted phone number
The previous owner of the phone number may be registered in the contacts of the device belonging to the unknown user.

• Your friend sees duplicates of your account on their LINE account
Check whether your old phone number or other information is registered under your name in the contacts on your friend's device.

If unknown users already appear in your friend list, please delete them after hiding or blocking them. For more information on removing friends, see this Help article.

If you're still having an issue after you've confirmed everything above, your device information may not be synced with the information on LINE's servers. For more information, see this Help article.

My friends don't appear toggle

If all of your friends have stopped appearing

You may have minimized your friend list. Please tap the light gray bar that says "Friends (number)" on the Friends tab to display them all again.

 

If only some of your friends have stopped appearing

It may be for one of the following reasons:

• They deleted their accounts

• You blocked, hid, or deleted their accounts

Note: You cannot undo deleting a friend. In this case, please add them again.

I can't add friends using ID Search toggle
If you're not able to add friends using ID search, please check the settings below.

If your friend can't find you:
1. Tap More > Settings > Profile or Edit profile.
2. Turn ON "Allow others to add me by ID".
You can also go to the profile screen here.

If you can't find your friend:
Your friend may not have turned on "Allow others to add me by ID". Please ask them to check their settings.

To prevent the username search feature from being abused, the feature will temporarily be suspended if a username is searched for (or the wrong ID is entered) too many times. Please understand that we cannot provide any details about how long accounts are suspended for due to security reasons.

I can't add friends using "Shake it!" toggle
When using the "Shake it!" feature, your friend will not be added until “Friend Added!” appears after both you and your friend tap Add. Please see the following if you are having trouble adding friends using “Shake it!”.

Note: You need to turn on Location Services or GPS to use “Shake it!”. If your location is not shown correctly after doing so, please try restarting your device.

If you are using an iOS device, please also check your privacy settings by following the steps below:

1. On your device, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
2. Tap LINE, then select While Using the App.
Note: If you cannot find LINE in Location Services, please restart your device. 

To add friends using “Shake it!”
1. Go to More > Add Friends.
2. Tap Shake it!.
3. Shake your phone with your friend at the same time, or just tap the screen.
4. Tap each other’s names on the list that appears.
5. Tap Add.
6. Check that “Friend Added!” appears.

I can't add friends via QR cod toggle
If a QR code isn't working, try generating a new one by following the steps below.

1. Tap the QR code icon on the right side of the search bar.
2. Tap My QR code.
3. Tap the refresh icon > OK.
Note: The search bar appears at the top of the Home/Friends, Chats, and News tabs.

Contacts on my device don't appear in my friend list toggle
If contacts from your device are not appearing in your friend list, it may be because:
• You or your friend have the “Allow others to add me” setting turned OFF.
• They were added to your Blocked or Hidden users list.
• They are appearing in your friend recommendations.

I have Auto-add friends turned ON, but my contact wasn't added toggle
If you have Auto-add friends turned ON but one of your contacts wasn't added to your friend list on LINE, check the information below.

Your contact's LINE account settings
A contact cannot be automatically added if:
• They turned OFF the "Allow others to add me" setting.
Note: Check to see if they appear in your Friend recommendations.
• They don't have a phone number registered to their LINE account.

Your LINE account settings
The contact might have been added to your Hidden accounts or Blocked users list.

To check:
1. Go to the Home/Friends or More tab and tap Settings.
2. Tap Friends.
3. Tap Hidden accounts or Blocked users.

If your contact appears in one of these lists, tap EditUnhide or Unblock.
Note: You won't be able to check your contact's account if it was removed from the Hidden accounts or Blocked users list. In this case, add them manually.

If your contact is still not automatically added to your friend list after checking the above, see this Help article and add them manually.

I receive the message “The account you are trying to add cannot accept any more friends.” toggle
There is a limit on the number of users you can add as a friend, and who can add you as a friend.

If the message “Sorry, the account you are trying to add cannot accept any more friends.” appears when you try to add a user, it means they cannot be added as a friend because they have already been added by too many other users.

How friends work/Add friends

Automatically adding friends from your contacts toggle
If you want to auto-add the contacts saved on your phone as friends, follow the steps below to configure your settings on your device and LINE.

To configure the privacy settings on your device:
1. Go to your device's Settings > Privacy > Contacts.
2. Turn LINE ON.

To auto-add friends on LINE:
1. Go to the Home/Friends or More tab and tap Settings.
2. Tap Friends.
3. Turn Auto-add friends ON.
Note: If Auto-add friends is already turned ON, tap the refresh icon next to the last auto-add date to manually sync your contacts.

Re-adding deleted friends toggle
To re-add friends that you deleted, you need to add them manually via ID/phone number search or QR code.
Note: After you've deleted friends, you cannot add them again using the Auto-add friends feature. This includes going to the Home/Friends or More tab > Settings > Friends and tapping the refresh icon next to Last auto-add

Please add them again by searching for their LINE ID or phone number, or using a QR code.

Friends on LINE toggle
Your contacts on LINE are listed as "friends." When you add someone as a friend, you can chat with them and invite them to groups. If you are mutual friends, you can also make voice calls with each other.

Note: Voice calls are not supported on some devices.

How friends are initially added after installing the app toggle
Your friends who have phone numbers saved in your contacts list and are using LINE will be added as friends automatically when you first sign up.

To prevent automatically adding friends and being added as a friend, please turn OFF Add Friends or Auto Add Friends, and Allow Others to Add when signing up.

Adding friends using ID searches toggle
You can add friends by searching for their LINE IDs.

1. In the LINE app, tap the Friends or More tab > Add friends (the silhouette icon).

4. Enter your friend's ID and tap the search icon.

Adding friends using a QR code toggle
You can add friends by having them scan your QR code or by scanning theirs.

To add a friend using your QR code:
1. Tap the QR code icon on the right side of the search bar > My QR code, or tap here from your smartphone.
2. Have your friend scan your QR code with their QR code reader.
3. Tap Add.

To add a friend using their QR code:
1. Tap the QR code icon on the right side of the search bar, or tap here from your smartphone.
2. Scan your friend's QR code.
3. Tap Add.

Note: The search bar appears at the top of the Home/Friends, Chats, and News tabs.

You can also send your QR code via email by going to Add friends > Invite. For details, see this Help article.

To add friend recommendations as friends:
1. Go to the Friends tab, and tap Friend recommendations.
2. Tap "+" to the right of the friends you want to add.

Inviting friends toggle
You can invite friends who aren't using LINE yet by following the steps below.
1. Go to More > Add Friends > Invite.
2. Choose Text message or Email.
3. Choose a friend, then tap the Invite button.

If you selected Text message, friends without the LINE icon displayed by their name can be invited. If you selected Email, friends with the Invite icon displayed by their name can be invited.

Important:
- Invitations will be sent using the SMS or email features on your device. If your friends are not receiving the invitations you send them, please check with your mobile service carrier or email service provider.
- The invite message will include your LINE display name.

Adding friends using phone number searches toggle
You can add friends by searching for their phone numbers.

Your friends need to have the Allow others to add me setting turned ON for you to be able to add them as a friend by searching for their phone numbers. Please have them check their Allow others to add me setting, then follow the steps below:

1. In the LINE app, tap the Friends or More tab > Add friends (the silhouette icon).
Note: You can also tap "Open the Add friends screen" below.
2. Tap Search.
3. Choose Phone number.
4. Select a country and enter your friend's phone number, then tap the search icon.

I want to exclude certain friends in my contacts list from being automatically added toggle
You can exclude certain friends from being automatically added by adding # in front of their name in your contacts list.

This feature applies to LINE version 5.6.0 or later.

To exclude certain friends from being automatically added:

• Add a # in front of their name in your contacts list. Be sure to enter # as a half-width character (E.g. #John Smith).
• Have friends added automatically from Settings.


Please be aware of the following:

• Friends who are already added as friends on LINE will not be deleted, even if you add a # in front of their name.
• If you add a # in front of the name of a friend who is already added, the name they set on LINE will appear.

If you wish to only add a few friends from your contacts list, you can do so by searching for their phone numbers.

How do I refuse a friend request? toggle
If you do not want to receive friend requests through your Timeline or from People Nearby, you can block these requests by switching off the following setting. Please note that the use of People Nearby and making friend requests is only available for LINE versions 6.5.0 and later.

1. Go to More > Settings.
You can also open this menu by tapping this link from your smartphone.
2. Tap Privacy.
3. Switch OFF Receive Friend Requests.

Why did I receive a message saying I cannot make a friend request? toggle
You will not be able to make a friend request in either of the following cases:

- The relevant user has a large number of pending friend requests.
- You have a large number of pending friend requests from those you sent out.
- The user you sent a friend request to is unable to receive your request.
- You have already sent a friend request to the relevant user.

What is People Nearby? toggle
People Nearby is a feature that allows you to search users around your current location and make new friends. Please note that the use of People Nearby and making friend requests is only available for LINE versions 6.5.0 and later.

From the LINE app, tap More > People Nearby, to start using this new feature.

You will be able to see the profile photos and distance of other users who are also using People Nearby from your location as well as send out a friend request to users who interest you. If they accept your friend request, you will be able to start exchanging messages with each other.

How will I know if a user accepted my friend request? toggle
If a user accepts your friend request, you will receive a push notification informing you so, and they will appear in your Friends list under New Friends.

After becoming friends on LINE, try sending them a message!

Do I have to allow access to my location information on iOS? toggle
People Nearby uses your current location to help you find new friends near you. For this reason, you need to allow the app to access your location information.

If you have Location Services turned OFF on your device, or if you have not allowed LINE to access your location, please refer to the following steps:

1. From your device, go to Settings > Privacy > and turn ON Location Services.
2. Tap LINE and select either Always or While Using the App.

Hiding/blocking/deleting friends

Hiding friends toggle
When you hide a friend:
• You can still receive chat messages from them.
• They won't appear in your friend list, and will be moved to the Hidden accounts list.
• You'll see their profile and Timeline updates.

Hiding an account doesn't remove it completely as a friend or friend recommendation. To remove an account, see this Help article.

To hide an account:
1. Tap the Home/Friends or More tab.
2. Tap and hold or swipe left on the account you want to hide.
3. Tap Hide.

To unhide an account:
1. Go to the Home/Friends or More tab > Settings.
2. Tap Friends.
3. Tap Hidden accounts.
4. Select Edit next to the account you want to show again.
5. Tap Unhide.
Note: It may take a while for the changes to take effect.

Tap here to go to the Settings menu from your smartphone.

To archive a chat, see this Help article.

Blocking friends toggle
When you block an account:

• You'll no longer be able to receive chats, voice calls, or video calls from it.
• It will be moved from your friend list to your Blocked users list.

Blocking an account from your friend list or Friend recommendations will not completely delete it from your account. To do so, please see the following Help article.


To block an account:
1. Tap the Friends tab.
2. Swipe to the left on the account you want to block.
3. Tap Block.

To unblock an account:
1. Tap More > Settings.
Note: Tap here to open the Settings menu from your smartphone.
2. Tap Friends.
3. Tap Blocked users.
4. Tap Edit next to the account you want to unblock.
5. Tap Unblock.

Note: It may take a while for the changes to take effect.

Deleting hidden or blocked accounts toggle
Unlike hiding or blocking, deleting an account from your friend list cannot be undone. Please keep this in mind if you are thinking of deleting the account of someone who you don't have any other way to contact.

To delete an account:
1. Tap the Home/Friends or More tab > Settings.
2. Tap Friends.
3. Tap Hidden accounts or Blocked accounts.
4. Tap Edit or put a check next to the account you want to delete.
5. Tap Delete.

Deleting friends toggle
If you delete a friend from your friend list, they cannot be restored. Please keep this in mind when deleting people who you don’t have any other way to contact.

To delete a friend:
1. Go to your friend list.
2. Tap and hold the friend you want to delete.
3. Tap Delete > Delete.

If there is a chance that you will want to restore a friend later, try hiding or blocking them.

Friend recommendations

How friend recommendations work toggle
A user may appear under Friend recommendations because:
• They have your phone number saved in their contacts and are also using LINE (but you don't have their number in your contacts).
• They knew your LINE ID and added you by searching for it on LINE.
• They added you from the member list of a group or multi-person chat you were both in.
• They added you by using your contact information (LINE account information) that was shared in a chat room by a friend of yours.
Note: If your contact information was shared, the user will only be able to see your name registered on LINE, profile photo, and status message.
• They added you using the URL in an invite email, or using your QR code.

In some cases, you'll see how a user added you under friend recommendations.

If you see how a user added you, it will be for the following reasons:
• They added you using your phone number.
• They added you using your QR code.
• They added you using your LINE ID.

If you don’t see how a user added you, it may be because:
• They were in a group with you and added you from it.
• They got your contact information from another one of your friends and added you.

If you have “Auto-add friends” turned on, and someone in your contacts shows up under your friend recommendations, it means they have the following settings configured:
Auto-add friends: ON
Allow others to add me: OFF

The name that appears for a user under your friend recommendations is the name they set on LINE. If an unfamiliar name appears under your friend recommendations, the only way to confirm who they are is to ask them directly.

Preventing others from adding you toggle

If you do not want to be automatically added as a friend by someone who has your phone number, please follow the steps below.
Note: These steps will not affect existing friends.

Friends' display names and profile photos toggle
Display names
The display names in your friend list will appear in one of the following ways, depending on how the friend was added, what name your friend set, and whether or not you have edited their name.

• Friends that were added by syncing your device's contacts will appear with the names saved in your device.
• Friends that were added using a method other than syncing your contacts (e.g. ID search, QR code) will appear with the names they set for themselves on LINE.
• Friends whose names you changed manually will appear with the names that you set.
Note: The changed names will only appear that way in your friend list.

Profile photos
Your friends' profile photos are the ones they set from the profile screen. You can change your own profile photo any time, but you cannot change your friends' profile photos.

For information on how to change display names or your profile photo, see this Help article.

Changing display names or your profile photo toggle
To change your display name:
1. Tap the Home/Friends or More tab > Settings > Profile.
2. Tap Display name.
3. Enter a new display name, then tap Save.

Tap here to access your profile from your smartphone.

To change a friend's display name:
1. In your friend list, tap the friend's name you want to change.
2. Tap the pencil icon next to their display name.
3. Enter a name and tap Save.

To change your profile photo:
1. Tap your icon or name at the top of your friend list.
2. Tap Edit profile.
3. Tap your profile photo.
4. Tap Take photo or video or Select photo or video.
5. Edit the photo any way you like and tap the paper airplane icon or Done.

Tap here to access your profile from your smartphone.

Note: You cannot change your friends' profile photos.

When you update your profile photo, it will be shared on Timeline and posted to your story. If you want to turn off Timeline notifications or posts to your story, see this Help article.

My contact's name is displayed differently toggle
If a LINE friend is registered using their phone number, the name that they are saved with in your device’s contacts will be displayed. If they are not registered using their phone number, the display name they set in LINE will be displayed.

If you add a friend who is saved in your contacts using their LINE ID, the display name they set in LINE will be displayed.

Display names do not appear properly toggle

If the friend whose name does not appear properly is saved in your device's contacts list, it is possible their name contained an emoji when it was saved.


Check your contacts list. If your friend's name was saved with an emoji, please try deleting it.


If the issue persists after trying the above, please refer to the following steps:


1. Go to More > Settings.
2. Tap Friends.
3. Turn ON Add Friends.

Note: If the option is already turned ON, tap the refresh icon next to the last synced date to manually sync your contacts.

Manually syncing your device information with the information on LINE's servers toggle
Your device automatically syncs with LINE's servers when it can connect to a network. This keeps your account up to date.

However, if your device cannot successfully sync for some reason and its information differs from the information on LINE's servers, you can sync the information manually.

If the following issues occur and you are unable to fix them by updating LINE to the latest version or restarting the app, please try syncing your device information manually.

• Friend and group information differs from the information your friends see
- Affected information: Friends, groups, group invitations, friend recommendations, favorites, hidden accounts, and blocked accounts
- Example: The group name you see differs from the name your friends see; You receive chat messages from someone whose account you've blocked.

• Profile screen information differs from the information your friends see, or changes to settings don't appear
- Affected information: Profile photo, display name, status message, LINE ID, birthday, LINE Profile+, and other settings
- Example: The profile photo you set differs from the one your friends see on their LINE accounts.

To access the syncing screens, open LINE on the smartphone you use the app on and tap one of the links below.
Note: Do not perform both of these syncing operations in a row.

Group basics

Deleting albums toggle
To delete an album: 
1. Tap the menu icon at the top of the chat screen > Albums.
2. Tap "..." at the bottom right of the album you want to delete, or tap the album > the options icon at the top right of the screen.
3. Tap Delete album > Delete.

To delete photos in an album:
1. Tap the menu icon at the top of the chat screen > Albums.
2. Tap the album > the options icon at the top right of the screen > Select photos.
3. Select the photos you want to delete, then tap the trash can icon at the bottom left of the screen > Delete.
Note: If you want to select all of the photos, tap Select all.

Please keep in mind that once an album or photo is deleted, it cannot be restored.

Adding photos to albums toggle
To add photos to an album: 
1. Tap the menu icon at the top of the chat screen > Albums.
2. At the bottom right of an album, tap "..." > Add photos.
3. Select the photos you want to add, then tap Next > Add.

You can also add photos sent in a chat room to albums. To do so:
1. Tap and hold a photo, then tap Album > Save.
2. Choose the album you want to save the photo in, then tap Add.

How many albums can I create? toggle
Up to 100 albums can be created per chat.

Additionally, a maximum of 1,000 photos can be added to each album (up to 300 photos at once).
Note: You can select up to 20 photos at a time when saving photos in a chat to an album by tapping and holding them.

Creating groups toggle
To create a group:
1. Tap the Home/Friends tab > Add friends (the silhouette icon) > Create group.
2. Select the friends you want to add as members, then tap Next.
3. Enter a group name, then tap Create.
Note:
- The friends you invite won't become official group members until they select Join in their invitation.
- Group names can be up to 50 characters long.
- You can update to the latest version of LINE here.

Viewing group notes and albums toggle
To view a group's notes and albums: 
1. Tap the group on the Home or Friends tab.
2. Tap Notes or Album.

The number next to the profile icons shows how many members posted photos in the album. Tap this number to see the photos each member added.

Posting group notes toggle
To post a group note: 
1. Start LINE and tap the Home/Friends tab > Groups > the group of your choice.
2. Tap Notes.
3. Tap "+" at the bottom right of the screen > Write.
4. Tap "What's new?" and write your note, then tap Post.

If you want to post an image, you can do so using the Album feature, which is specifically for posting and viewing images.

My group notes appear on my Timline, but can my LINE friends see them too? toggle

Deleting group notes or comments/likes posted on group notes toggle
To delete a group note, follow the steps below.
Note: You can only delete group notes that you created.

1. Start LINE and tap the Home/Friends tab > Groups > the group of your choice.
2. Tap Notes.
3. Tap "..." at the top right of the note you want to delete.
4. Tap Delete > Delete.

A comment on a note can only be deleted by the person who posted it or the creator of the note. To unlike a post, just tap the Like icon again.

If you rejoin a group with a different LINE account, you won't be able to delete any notes, "likes," or comments made by your previous account.

Leaving groups toggle
Your chat messages, notes, albums, and photos will not be deleted if you leave a group. If there is anything you want to delete, make sure to do so before leaving the group.

When a group member deletes their account or leaves the group, a message appears saying "XXXX left the group."

To leave a group:
1. Tap the menu icon at the top of the group chat screen > Leave.
2. Tap Leave.

If every member leaves, all of the content posted in the group will be deleted and cannot be restored.

What do other users see when I decline a group invitation? toggle
If you decline a group invitation, you will still be displayed as a pending member in the group. To have yourself completely removed from the group, the friend who invited you needs to cancel your invitation.

Can a new member in a group view the posts made in it before they joined? toggle
When a user joins a group, they can view Note and Album posts that were made during the time their membership was pending, but will not be able to see any chat messages posted before they joined.

You cannot delete notes by members who have left a group.

Deleting groups or group members toggle
A group is deleted automatically when all its members have left. If there are still members in a group, follow the steps below to delete them first.

1. Tap the menu icon at the top of the group chat screen > Members.
2. Tap Edit.
3. Tap "-" to the left of the member you want to delete.
4. Tap Remove > Remove.

After all of the other members have been deleted, you can delete the group by leaving it. For the steps to leave a group, see this Help article.

1. Tap the Friends tab > the group name.
2. Tap Join.

Setting a group cover photo toggle
To set a group cover photo:
1. Tap the Friends tab > the group you want to set a cover photo for.
2. Tap and hold the cover photo, then tap Select group cover photo.
3. Select a photo, trim it, and tap Next.
4. Edit the photo any way you like, then tap Done.
