My friend's account appears, but a different person is using it

If you synced LINE with your device’s contacts, your friend list on LINE will use the names registered in your device.

Note: Syncing LINE with your device's contacts automatically adds friends registered in your contacts as friends on LINE. See this Help article for more information.

To see the name a friend set on LINE, tap the pencil icon next to their name. Their name will appear in small text at the top left of the screen.

If the person that appears in your friend list is actually different from the person using the LINE account, either of the following situations is possible.

• The owner of the phone number registered in your device's contacts changed.

• The registered phone number is incorrect.

Issues happening on your device

Check whether an old phone number is registered under your name in your device's contacts

⋅Someone who doesn't use LINE appears in your friend list

Make sure your friend's phone number is correct and current in your device's contacts

⋅The name of someone in your friend list suddenly changed

Check whether you changed their registered name in your device's contacts

⋅You meant to chat with a friend registered in your device's contacts, but it was actually someone else

Check whether you've registered multiple phone numbers for your friend in your device's contacts

Issues happening on another person's device

⋅Your friend sees you on LINE even though you don't use the service

Check whether your old phone number is registered in the contacts of your friend's device

⋅Someone you don't know sees you on their LINE account when you register a newly contracted phone number

The phone number's previous owner may be registered in the unfamiliar user's contacts

⋅Your friend sees duplicates of your account on their LINE account

Check whether your old phone number or other information is registered under your name in your friend's contacts

If unknown users already appear in your friend list, please delete them after hiding or blocking them.

I receive the message “The account you are trying to add cannot accept any more friends.”

I verified a Japanese phone number and can't search for IDs/phone numbers because age verification is required

If your LINE account is verified with a Japanese phone number, the ID/phone number search feature will be restricted until you verify that you are 18 or over. This is in order to protect minors who are using the service.

LINE uses the age verification services provided by Japanese mobile service providers. You can verify your age if you have a contract with au (KDDI), NTT Docomo, SoftBank, Y!mobile, or LINE Mobile.

In any of the following cases, you will not be able to verify your age and search for friends using their phone number or ID.

• Your contract is with a mobile service provider that cannot be used for age verification.

• Your mobile service contract is under the name of someone under 18 years of age.

• Your mobile service contract is under a company's name.

• You have not registered your user information. (For mobile service providers other than LINE Mobile)

• You have not applied for sp-mode. (For NTT Docomo)

• You cannot configure your mobile service provider's setting for sharing your age. (For mobile service providers other than LINE Mobile)

In any of the situations mentioned above, try adding friends with a different method (e.g. QR code scan or auto-adding friends from your device contacts).
